Food, health and climate are all interconnected. We contribute to better public health by developing new, healthy products and making existing popular food favourites healthier. Our companies are reducing salt, sugar and saturated fat in a growing number of foods.
Orkla’s nutrition and wellness work supports the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goal 2 on access to safe, nutritious food and Goal 3 on good health and well-being.
As a leading manufacturer of food and other grocery products, we have a possibility of exerting a positive influence on people’s diet. Even small changes in products that are eaten and drunk every day can help improve public health.
Our goal is to reduce the overall content of sugar and salt in our product portfolio by a total of 15 per cent for the period from 2015 to 2025. We will realise this goal without compromising on taste or food safety, and to this end have teamed up with external centres of expertise.
In the past 15 years, our companies have achieved a substantial reduction in saturated fat, in part by replacing palm oil with healthier oils. In some markets, this has resulted in an overall decrease of 50 per cent in the proportion of saturated fat in our products. We constantly launch new food products containing whole grains and more vegetables, and continuously develop our range of fish products.
Plant-based
We regularly expand our portfolio of plant-based products, many of which are healthier alternatives to food products based on meat and dairy raw materials. A well-balanced vegetarian diet is nutritionally adequate and can be beneficial to health in terms of preventing and treating a number of diseases. We are proud to produce products based on oats, almonds, soya, peas and rice, which replace animal protein.
The Green Keyhole healthier choice label
We launched the first Green Keyhole-labelled products in Norway in 2010, and the number of products has increased every year since then. The Green Keyhole label is a Nordic labelling system that identifies healthier products, and is primarily used by Orkla companies in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Lithuania. In total, Orkla had 263 Green Keyhole-labelled products in 2021, an increase of 25 per cent from 2020.
